"Tray Chic" in Partnership with One Kings Lane

A basic bar tray on our basic prop table
Most of the time I'm a bit of a homebody.  I like being able to drink more than two drinks and then stumble up to bed and sleep it all off.  Then when my major became theatre, things changed a bit.  The time of rehearsal and performance is sacred; you know you are living on borrowed time.  That cast and crew will never be all together except for during that time, and you have to make the most of it.  In college none of us had great homes to hang out in, so we frequented bars whenever we left a performance or rehearsal.  If we got really lucky, we got to do a play about a bar.  There is no better in-between from a bar and home than a theater.

Since returning to Reno, I took advantage of the opportunity to jump back into the theatre scene, and was lucky enough to get one about a bar.  At "Last Call at the Old Southwest" we have exactly one tray acting as the bar for our show.  You won't see me onstage, I'm the Stage Manager.  Since the show is currently running, I'm more the prop master right now.  Since I'm staying with family, the show has sort of turned into my home away from home.  The cast and I frequent bars after work since Good Luck Macbeth is in the Midtown District, and there is lots to choose from.

Still, when I was approached for this post about making a tray your own, I thought of our little tray in the show.  This little tray is basically a symbol for the bar area happening backstage.  When (not if) you come see the show, it might slip by you completely.  But it means a lot to me, I've spent lots of time with it.  Sometimes all you need is a basic, no frills tray to get the job done.  I'm sure I'm the only one who is doing a post on a basic silver tray...but maybe you'll remember it more that way.

Of course, if you are looking for a nice tray for your home, then heading over to One Kings Lane for something that will actually impress someone when they come to your home.

Vanilla Chai at Swill

I know, I know...another Chai.  You know, when I first tried one, I thought it was like drinking potpourri.  I totally hated it.  Then I really started to like them as an alternative to drinking real coffee, which I'm normally not a fan of.

I asked for my regular Chai the first time at Swill.  The cool guy behind the counter asked if I wanted a regular chai or a vanilla chai.  I said "Well shoot, if you are going to give me a choice I'm going to try a vanilla!  I didn't even see it as an option."

He seemed pretty amused by that, and several minutes later I got it delivered to my table.  It was amazing!  So smooth and creamy, and yet that potpourri flavor that I hated and first and came to love was amazing in this one.

I'll for sure be back for more of this one, and maybe try out some other things.  If they can make it taste this good, maybe regular coffee will taste good there too!

Chai Latte @HubCoffeeReno

Now that I'm back in town, getting together with old schoolmates is starting to come about, and it's been awesome.  It's so exciting to see what everyone grew up to be.  Maureen gave me some advise when we were in sixth grade; part my hair on the side.  It never occurred to me to change something like that up, and it changed my whole life.

Now she's a super awesome hair stylist at L'Essence Day Spa and Salon, and I would seriously suggest that if you need some awesome new hair color to make an appointment with her.
She has some of her cool transformations up on her Instagram,

We met up at Hub Coffee Roasters since she's a super busy momma, and I decided to go with my old standby of a Chai Latte.  Mo was nice enough to get it for me, so I'm going to have to get something for her next time we see each other.

The Chai was good, and very pretty.  In the end though, I don't think I like it as much as I like the one from Bibo's.  I know Hub is supposed to be better according to Yelp and Facebook reviews, so I'm willing to go back another time and give them a shot.

It's still a solid second in my book, and I would for sure go there again.  Their river side location was great for people-watching, and catching up with my old friend.  The parking lot was a little strange, but I got it figured out the second time around the block.  All in all, a great time with some great coffee.

Oprah Cinnamon Chai Latte @Starbucks

According to the Starbucks site, the Oprah Cinnamon Chai latte is "created in partnership with Oprah Winfrey and Teavana teaologists, this distinctive chai blend features a bold infusion of cinnamon, ginger, cardamom and cloves, blended with loose-leaf black tea and rooibos. Lightly sweetened and finished with milk and served over ice."
I'm going to be real about this...I do not like what Oprah represents.  I'm sure that she's a nice lady, but I hate how much hype she gets.  She reads a book, everyone has to go out and read that book.  She can do no wrong, and I hate that people will blindly follow anyone like that.  She's human, but no one treats her like she's human.  She's the golden calf idol.

That being said, she does seem to do some great things.  For example, buying this drink means that a portion of it is donated to "educational opportunities to the youth."  I'm not sure exactly what that entails, but it sure sounds like something positive, right?

I suppose that being said, they wouldn't really offer anything extra for charity.  When it comes to the quality, this tastes exactly like their regular chai latte.  The only difference was when I looked down with embarrassment when the guy announced he had an "Oprah" Latte instead of just a normal chai latte for pick up.

In the end it did what it was supposed to do, which is keep my caffeine headache at bay and taste pretty good.  I'm so sorry Oprah, but you aren't really on my list of official drinks of Nevada.

Whiskey Sour and "Reno" Juice @1864Tavern

I have a confession.  I love 1864 Tavern.  It is everything I want in a bar.  Great affordable drinks, amazing decor, and it is a Nevada themed bar all the way.

For those of you not paying attention in your Nevada History class, 1864 was the year we became a state.  You might remember because last year we had that whole 150th anniversary thing.  I heard it was fun.  I was in Las Vegas at the time, so I didn't really get to celebrate.  The only state they are in is the state of flux(or).

Back to happier things!  1864 Tavern has fuzzy wallpaper, and Nevada trivia cards at the tables, as well as board games so that you are intellectually stimulated as well having a good buzz going.  While I was there I heard people getting the trivia ghastly wrong, as well as a few people debating on how Tesla coming would impact our economical status in the city.  It was nice because the music wasn't so loud that the only thing I could hear was my companion yell "I'm soooooooooooooooooooo wasted!"  When that is all you've heard the last 10 years, it's nice to be back to a place where people have a brain in their heads.

I went a little while back after seeing Game Show Show at Good Luck Macbeth.   It stars the Utility Players, and everyone's favorite Amanda Alvey.  She is also a stand up comedian who happens to be my BFF.  If you are having trouble choosing a favorite female comedian in the next "Best of" poll, just pick her.  You'll be doing the right thing.

Although I usually go for a Picon Punch, I decided to branch out and order a Whisky Sour, as I saw they made it with real eggs.  (Don't worry, Neon Beast is covering the Picon Punch in the next post) I had a taste of someone else's when I was visiting Oakland that was so amazing, so I was looking forward to this one.

The bartender was new (to me), and it looked yummy to start.  I knew it would be my only boozy drink of the night, so it took awhile for me to start drinking it.  Maybe that was my mistake, because it was really sour.  The Neon Beast tried it and puckered up like that old Bitter Beer Commercial.  I liked it well enough, but I nursed it for a good long while because I couldn't take a lot at once.

Because I was driving, I decided to check out the juice menu for my next drink.
Since I'm not a big fan of Beets or Kale, I decided to go for a Reno.  Cucumber, Lemon, Honey, and Ginger seemed like it would be a good combination.  That turned out to be an understatement.  Though it was a little heavy on the ginger, it was seriously amazing.  All the flavors come together in a strong, but amazing way.  Sort of like how our state is strong.

It's non-alcoholic, but I'm calling it an official contender.  Strong flavors should represent our state.  The only thing that would make it better was if it had sage or pine.  We could link it up with Home Means Nevada and call it a day.
